Poster Exhibitions Meeting with Russian artist Polina Kanis
Meeting with Russian artist Polina Kanis

YARAT Contemporary Art Center is pleased to invite you to meet a young Russian artist – Polina Kanis, on February 29, at 17:00, whose personal exhibition will be held at Artwin Gallery Kiçik QalArt on March 1.

Author bares the fear of traumatic collision with another, concealed at the bottom of any society in her works. Polina Kanis’s dystopian, therefore, realistic works reflect landscape of emotionless desert, on the background of which the subjects shorn of emotions and estranged not only from themselves but also from others like them, take part in conditional and universal events, causes and purposes of which are unknown. We will see that the place considered safe for a group of people that hide from humans, is not actually a shelter, but is a sticking point in Kanis’s video work titled “Pool”. Darkness, humidity and low gravity are completely defining this space and carry all its characteristics. People are comfortable in the shelter because they have experienced real danger. They are isolated and future developments are not so important for them.

Polina Kanis was born in 1985 in Leningrad. She graduated from the Pedagogical University named after Herzen, Moscow School of Photography and Multimedia named after Rodchenko. She was included into the long list of Kandinsky Prize in the “Young artist” category in 2010. She was nominated for “Innovation” State Prize in 2011 and in 2015. Solo exhibitions of Kanis were held in the frame of Manifesta 10, St. Petersburg, 2014, as well as on the island of "New Holland", St. Petersburg, 2013, in Mistetsky Arsenal, Kiev, 2012. Kanis’s art works are based on the following collections - National Center of Contemporary Art, Moscow, Stella Art foundation, Moscow Museum of Modern Art, Warsaw, The Art Vectors Investment Partnership Foundation, Vienna, Foundation of Vladimir Smirnov and Konstantin Sorokin, Moscow, Foundation Videoinsight, Bologna. Polina is nominated for 2015 "Innovation" Prize for her video work titled “Pool”.

Mud Volcanoes In Azerbaijan

Mud volcanism is one of the most interesting natural geological phenomena on the Earth. Some geological, hydrogeological, and tectonic factors lead to the formation of mud volcanoes. When mixtures of gas, water, and some sediments expel at the surface of the Earth, and this process continues for a long period of time, then these mixtures take different external morphological shapes, and create mud volcanoes.
