A series of events dedicated to the 5th May – Weavers Day

On May 4-5 2017, the Azerbaijan Carpet Museum will celebrate Weavers Day. Here, a series of events devoted to the contemporary carpet art, such as round table, exhibition, and master classes will be held.

Azerbaijani carpet art has an ancient history. Azerbaijani carpets are known at international level, saved and stored at the world museums and private collections. Thanks to the care of the country, on November 10, 2010, the Azerbaijani carpet art was included into the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of UNESCO.

The President of the Republic of Azerbaijan, Ilham Aliyev signed several orders and decrees on the development of the carpet weaving art: The Law of the Republic of Azerbaijan on the Protection and Development of the Azerbaijani Carpet Art; the Decree on the Establishment of Professional Holiday Weavers’ Day and others.

The events will be attended by more than 100 countrys leading and individual weavers, carpet artists and experts, teachers and students of the Azerbaijan State Academy of Fine Arts and other professionals working in this field. During the round table, diverse issues will be discussed, including todays development of carpet art and its current problems and solution ways; research and promotion of the forgotten weaving techniques and passing them to the future generation; to put handmade carpets on the local and global markets; to provide carpet weavers with raw metarials; to preserve specific characteristics of each region in the period of globalization, etc.

On the same dates, a fairy-exhibition will be held, which includes works of participants from all corners of our country, such as carpets and carpet products that were delighthly woven with natural dyes. The aim of this exhibition is to preserve carpet art and support indivudual weavers working in this notable field. We carry on this tradition and stimulate its continuation and development, supporting this laborious activity.

We are pleased to invite the residents and visitors of our city to participate in this fairy-exhibition.

Within the framework of these events, master classes on the forgotten pile and flat woven techniques will be organized.
